Stage 1 English Essentials A & B

This course is aimed at improving the students’ confidence and understanding of communicating for different audiences and purposes. Students will produce two responses to texts and create two original texts. At least one of these will be delivered as an oral presentation and at least one will be in written form.

Stage 1 English Literacy A & B

Students will have the opportunity to develop basic reading and writing skills through engaging in a variety of written, practical and hands-on activities. Students will be required to create two texts and respond to two texts each semester. At least one will be in written form and one will be an oral presentation using visual prompts.

Stage 1 English Specialist A & B

This course is aimed at extending students in their studies of English. Students will gain a deeper knowledge of the techniques, structure and conventions of a range of texts. It aims to prepare students for Stage 2 English Communications and Tertiary studies.

In each semester, students will provide evidence of their learning through four assessments, with at least one assessment from each assessment type. At least one assessment will be an oral or multimodal presentation, and at least one will be in written form.

Stage 2 English Communications

This course is aimed at improving students’ confidence and understanding of communicating for different audiences and purposes. Students will produce three responses to texts (one in oral form) and three original texts (one as a timed piece). In the communication folio students will compare two texts, produce an original text, and present an oral reflection of their text. In the external folio, students will analyse a text, produce an original text, and present a written explanation of their text.

Stage 2 English Pathways

This course is aimed at developing students’ understanding of English in the real world. Students will build on their knowledge and usage of techniques, structure and conventions in a range of more commonly used contexts. Texts may include narrative, film, article, letter, website, and instruction.

Students will provide evidence of their learning through eight assessments, including three text analysis, four text production, and a language study. There will be at least two oral or multimodal presentations, one each in text analysis and text production.

Stage 2 English Studies (Open Access)

This course is aimed at engagement in critical study of English literature. Students will read, view and reflect on a range of texts, such as novels, poetry, film and drama. It is well-suited to students with skills in critical analysis and essay writing. Over the year, students will analyse four class texts, poetry, a range of short texts, and analyse two texts independently. They will also produce two written and two oral texts, and participate in a three hour examination.
